As I sat there, on the couch, looking at people, enjoying the music and basically having some rest and relaxation, which I might add was due after a hectic week, there comes this girl up to me, smiling and carrying a half-empty glass of beer. She says hi, sits next to me and we start talking about this and that, her favorite things, my favorite things and all sort of stuff like that.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I see a woman’s hand grab the girl I was talking to by the back of the neck and a cat fight starts in the blink of an eye, with bottles broken, screaming, scratching and clawing. All this time, in the background, the DJ had put on the Gretchen Wilson earring song. You know, the one where she says something like “don’t make me take my earrings out… I’ll show you what a cat fight’s all about”.
Anyway, the fight is soon over, none of the two girls were badly injured and the only bruising visible was the one on their egos. The Gretchen Wilson earring song ended too. As I was standing there, looking amazed at that cute girl with whom I was chatting not five minutes before, the other girl, the attacker, gets up from the floor, looks at me with big eyes and walks away with her head lowered. Later, I asked some of the people who seemed to know her what had happened, and they told me that she had confused me with her boyfriend, since it seems I look like him from behind, and she went insane when seeing that “her boyfriend” was chatting up this nice girl while drinking beer at a party. Needless to say, since then I have made it a point out of finding places where my back is against the wall.
Why am I telling you this? The connection is the Gretchen Wilson earring song. It became an anchor for me. Now, whenever I hear it, that fight between those two girls comes to my mind, and the song gains a new dimension. I’m sure it has happened to you too. Like, say, when you buy an album from some artist, listen to the tracks, but none of the songs impress you too much. Or there is one song that annoys you. Later, that artist puts on a video with all the right images and, in an instant, you love that song. This is the power of image-sound combination and you should know it is there before you start buying the albums of one artist or another.
